November
The 2007 MCHA show season ended with a great
year-end show at the Sapphire Event Center in
Corvallis. Thank you to John and Cindy Stefka for
producing this cutting. The winners of some of the
year-end awards were not decided until the last cow
was cut. Speaking of awards a big thank you to John
Seymour and his committee for once again coming up
with awesome awards. I do believe Montana gives the
best awards! This year the champion in each class
received a sterling silver Gist belt buckle
compliments of the corporate sponsor of the class.
Reserve champions were presented saddle blankets
with mini belt buckles on the corners listing the
class and year. Third place received headstalls with
silver conchos listing the class and year. Fourth
place was awarded tooled loping hackamores and fifth
place received sports boots with the year and MCHA
on them. Four lucky year-end winners walked away
with saddles. Montana has a unique way of
determining who receives the saddles. All the
year-end champions are brought to the front of the
room. As they stand, Ping-Pong balls with the class
names are drawn from a bucket. Whatever class is
drawn, that champion sits down. The last one
standing wins the saddle. This is done four times.
The winner of the saddles were Lane Ternan ($2,000
rider), Joe Liss ($10,000 Novice Horse), Bill Parker
(Non-Pro), and Jann Parker ($50,000 Amateur). Jann
donated her saddle back to be auctioned with the
proceeds going to the youth scholarship fund.
One hundred eight people attended the awards
banquet. Thank you to Sherry Lee for arranging the
banquet, which was held at the Banque Club in
Hamilton. The prime rib, salmon and mesquite chicken
(along with the rest of the meal) was delicious.
Special thanks to Dorothy Seymour for helping Sherry
collect the money.
The auction was a huge success raising $5,219 for
the association and $3,900 for the Youth Scholarship
Fund. Thank you to Carrie Bruch for chairing the
auction and a big thank you to Jim Ellis,
auctioneer, and Diane Ellis and Tom Bruch for
clerking the sale and to John Dublin for his help as
ring man in getting bids from the audience. Thank
you, also, to our photographer, Stephanie Shelton.
It is no easy task to keep the award winners rounded
up for a group photo. Also, thanks to all the
members for donating wonderful items to be sold and
to all the buyers. Your generosity is greatly
appreciated.
Thank you to Kathy Markette and John Schuler and all
the family members for serving breakfast on Sunday
before the General membership meeting. A delicious
breakfast of biscuits and gravy, sausage, eggs,
fruit, muffins, and more was served to around 60
people. The minutes from the membership meeting will
be in the next issue. The results of the election
are President – Todd Wirthlin, Vice President –
Theresa Nelson, Secretary/Treasurer – Shirley
Williams. Directors serving for two years will be
Todd Banner, Karla Camp and Donald Weeding.
Directors serving for one year will be Bambi Gress,
Darrell Lee and Laurie McGuane. Congratulations.
Thank you to all the members and show producers for
a great 2007 show season. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

MCHA President's News
By David Markette
The MCHA 2007 cutting season is winding down and we
have had a great year of cutting. Many of the
year-end award winners won't be decided until the
last cow is cut at the year-end show.
The awards committee, once again, has fantastic
prizes arranged for the year-end winners. Sorry - I
can't list the awards because, like in past years,
the awards are kept secret and only revealed at the
awards banquet. But trust me, who ever wins any of
the awards will be very pleased.
The Year-End Cutting will be Friday, Sept. 28 and
Saturday, Sept. 29 at the Sapphire Events Center in
Corvallis. Remember entries close Tuesday, Sept.
25th at 10:00 p.m. You can enter via the MCHA
website, www.montancha.com, or phone entries to
Shaun Pichler at 406-780-1030. Consult the MCHA
website for more details.
Every year in conjunction with the awards banquet we
have an auction. It is the primary fundraiser for
our association. We need items for the auction.
Carrie Bruch has agreed to chair the auction. Call
Carrie at 406-222-0330 or email her at crb@rockinb.com
to let her know what items you will be donating.
There will be some great items in the live and
silent auctions so come prepared to buy and support
our Association. The auction and awards banquet will
be Saturday, September 29th at The Banque Club in
Hamilton. The festivities will start at 6 p.m. with
a no-host social hour. The dinner is scheduled for
7:00 p.m. with the auction to follow. Sherry Lee is
the chair for the banquet. Please contact Sherry at
406-363-5246 for banquet reservations. The cost is
$25.00 per person. A child's menu (children under 10
years old) is available at a reduced price. You will
have a choice of prime rib, mesquite chicken or
salmon for dinner. Salad, vegetable, potato, rolls,
beverage and cheesecake is included.
The General Membership meeting is Sunday, September
30, at 9:00 a.m. at the Sapphire Events Center
arena. Be sure to attend so you can vote on any
issues that need to be decided.
Don't forget to return your ballot for officers and
directors to Betty Lou Weeding. They need to be
postmarked by September 22nd or you can hand deliver
them to Betty Lou by 5:00 p.m. on Friday September
28th at the year-end show. There was a computer
glitch on the first ballot and a director candidate
was omitted so be sure to vote the second ballot
that was sent to you.
Good luck to everyone competing at the year-end
show. See you at Corvallis. Enjoy the cutting and
all the activities.

August
Montana President's News:
We've had some great cuttings this summer and more
shows are planned for August. The Big Sky Futurity
and Aged Event weekend cutting is scheduled August
11th and 12th at Vaughn, Montana. This cutting will
precede the Big Sky Futurity and Aged Event
competition, which will follow on August 15th
through 19th at Vaughn. The next week the Sapphire
Events Center will host an Aged event competition
August 22nd through August 24th with a weekend
cutting slated for August 25th and 26th at
Corvallis. Cutters will then head to the Meadow Vue
Ranch Cutting August 29th through September 2nd at
Henry's Lake, Idaho.
Our thoughts are with Lisa Hendrickson who had a
horse accident resulting in major injuries. An
auction was held during the June Sapphire Events
Center cutting to help with medical expenses. Thank
you to everyone who organized this and who donated
and bought items. Lisa is now home from the hospital
and we wish her a speedy recovery.
As our cutting season winds down I want to once
again thank our 2007 corporate sponsors and want to
remind everyone to patronize them, thank them, and
support them as they have MCHA. Our sponsors are Ace
Hardware, Allied Waste Services, Billings Livestock
Commission Horse Sales, Dublin Cutting Horses,
Flying Diamond Cutting Horses, Montana Ranch of
Bigfork, LLC, Johnson Saddlery, Mission Mountain
Tire, T Square Ranch, Rockin W Quarter Horses, Sport
Land Trailer Sales & Service, Switchback Cutting
Horses, LLC, TLC Ranch LLC, and Big Sky Internet
Design.
Good luck to everyone as we approach the end of our
cutting season in Montana.
July
Last month the Angela Bauer Scholarship cuttings
were discussed. In addition to the scholarship
cuttings a $2,000 scholarship is given from the
memorial funds to a youth to help further their
education. This scholarship differs from the
scholarship cuttings because the youth submit an
application then the winner is chosen by the
scholarship committee. Jacob Bruch was selected as
the winner of this year's $2,000 scholarship.
Congratulations Jake. We know you will excel in
college as you have cutting.
Our MCHA show season is well underway. We still have
some great cuttings left this summer. In addition to
weekend cuttings there will be two aged event
competitions in August. The Big Sky Futurity and
Aged Event cutting is slated for August 15-18 in
Great Falls. There will also be a weekend cutting in
Vaughn on August 11 - 12. The next week the Sapphire
Event Center at Corvallis will hold an aged event
competition and weekend cutting on August 22 - 26.
Be sure to check the MCHA website,
www.montanacha.com, for more information on all of
the MCHA cuttings.
Montana fared well at the Western National
Competition at Ogden, Utah. The members racked up an
incredible 1,475 points thus claiming the reserve
title in the AQHA/NCHA Affiliate Challenge and
bringing home $5,000 for the affiliate.
Congratulations to all MCHA riders and thank you!
Last month the MCHA winners who had already shown

June
Montana CHA News:
Three years ago we lost one of our members, Angela
Bauer, in a tragic automobile accident. Angela
succumbed after being struck head-on by a drunk
driver. Angie was a tough competitor and held many
offices in our association in addition to being a
show secretary at many of the cuttings. Her husband,
Chad, requested that memorials be used to establish
a youth scholarship fund. The first of the 2007
Angela Bauer Youth Scholarship cuttings was held at
Billings in April. Angela touched many lives and
made an impact on many people. One of those she
worked with was Dennie Dunn. Dennie was the judge at
some of the cuttings when Angie was the show
secretary. Dennie just so happened to be the judge
at the April Cow Country cutting at Billings and
when he heard this was one of the shows that was
hosting the Angela Bauer Scholarship cutting he very
generously donated ALL of his judge's earnings to
the scholarship fund. A big tip of the hat to Dennie
Dunn! Thank you so much! The winners of the
scholarships are Senior Youth – Wyatt Nuttall, $200;
Jesse Pichler, $150; Lindsey Lee, $100; Junior Youth
– Lane Ternan, $200; Allison Cederberg, $150; Riley
Dublin, $100. Angela Bauer Scholarship cuttings will
be held at the Bitterroot Valley Cutting in Hamilton
on June 16 and Double D Creek Ranch cutting in
Columbus on July 21.
Offering an array of items, the benefit auction
hosted by Cow Country Cuttings April 14 & 15 for
Norm and Sally Schuchard of, Harlowton, Montana,
raised $4,089. The Schuchard’s have had some tough
luck with Norm fracturing his arm and requiring
several surgeries. Sally will be traveling to Denver
to donate a kidney to her sister in the next few
weeks. Special thanks to Donald and Betty Lou
Weeding and Deb Weyer for their organization of the
items, Shaun Pichler for her cashiering abilities,
and Tyler Weyer for his auctioneering skills during
the live auction. A big thank you, cutters, for your
great showing of support for this family.
The Western Nationals in Ogden are underway as this
article is written and the Montana Affiliate is
making a dynamic performance. Montana has 49 members
competing. Some highlights of Montana CHA members
are Will Nuttall riding Playin Playgun owned by
Switchback Cutting Horses LLC won BOTH the $3,000
Novice Horse and $10,000 Novice Horse. John L.
Dublin and Dualin Smart Gun owned by Mike Willey won
the first go of the $3,000 Novice Horse and placed
in the finals. John Dublin also made the finals in
the $10,000 Novice horse on board Mike Willey's
horse, An Oaken Playgun. Will Nuttall continued his
hot streak placing 10th in the $10,000 Novice horse
riding Keep It Short owned by his son, Wyatt
Nuttall. Jessica Bruch riding Lenas Spicy N Hot,
owned by her parents Tom & Carrie Bruch, placed 7th
in the $2,000 Limit Rider. Stephanie Long, riding An
Oaken Playgun, and Lane Ternan, riding Badgers Danny
Dry, also made the finals in the $2,000 Limit Rider.
Last year the Montana youth won both the junior
(Lane Ternan) and senior (Lindsey Lee) youth
classes. The youth once again made a tremendous
showing. Wyatt Nuttall just missed claiming a top
ten buckle in the Junior Youth. Wyatt placed 11th on
his horse, Keep It Short. Fallon Nuttall, Jessica
Bruch, and Philip Layne claimed top ten buckles in
the Senior Youth. Fallon placed 7th riding Zig Zag
Cat, Jessica Bruch was 9th on Lenas Spicy N Hot and
Philip Layne a member from Utah also placed 9th
riding Acre In Command. Fallon Nuttal riding Zig Zag
Cat is the $3,000 Novice Non-Pro reserve champion,
Suzzane Nellen and Pd Smart Starlight placed 10th,
Susan Sohr riding Joe Dees Mystic placed 15th and
Kelly McDonald on board Boonsmals Kandy Man and Mary
Rosebush riding Slips Cow toy also placed in the
finals. Congratulations to all the MCHA members and
good luck to those left to compete. We will have
more results next month.
When you receive this newsletter NCHA Days will be
just starting at the Double D Creek Ranch arena in
Columbus. Montana was selected to host the Cutting
Academy clinic, which will be held May 31. This will
kick-off a fabulous weekend of cutting with our
Wyoming and Montana friends.
We've already had some great cuttings this year with
more scheduled throughout the summer. Contact our
website, www.montanacha.com for show information,
results, standings and current information.

Message
By: David T. Markette
If you love to cut – like we all do - then you loved
April, as there were many cuttings to attend. Thank
you to all the producers of the April cuttings – MSU
Horseman's Club (Bozeman), Dave and Deb Weyer
(Columbus), Bill and Jann Parker (Billings) and Sage
Riders Club (Miles City). We appreciate all of your
dedication and hard work. Many of our members
competed at the Western National Finals in Ogden,
Utah the end of April. Results were not available as
of press time but we will have them next month.
I forgot to mention last month that the Sage Riders
Club of Miles City renamed their cutting to honor a
long time supporter, Wes Tibbetts. Wes passed away
after last year's cutting. He was very instrumental
in the success of the Miles City cutting and would
be pleased that his wife, Judy, and friend, Caren
Coffee, along with the Sage Riders Club members have
continued the tradition of this cutting. They also
hosted a Tom Lyons cutting clinic.
The month of May finds two MCHA approved cuttings
scheduled. The State Fair Grounds (Montana Expo
Park) in Great Falls is the location of Sun River
Cattle Company cutting and 4 Year-Old Aged Event on
May 12 and 13 produced by Todd Banner. Todd recently
moved to the Great Falls area from Corvallis where
he produced cuttings for many years. There will be a
Montana High School Rodeo Association high school
cutting on Friday, May 11. Consult the MHSRA website
for more details on the high school cutting. The
next weekend cutters will head to western Montana to
the Sapphire Event Center in Corvallis for a cutting
produced by John and Cindy Stefka.
Montana has the pleasure to host NCHA Weekend.
Cutters from Montana and Wyoming will converge at
the Double D Creek Ranch arena in Columbus for three
days of cutting June 1 – 3 (3 shows over 3 days).
Please note early entry deadline is Tuesday, May 29.
Since this show starts on Friday entries are due on
Tuesday. This is always a fun weekend. In addition
to cutting with our Wyoming (and Montana) friends
there is always great prizes. Montana has been
selected to host the NCHA Cutting Academy Clinic on
May 31. It will be held at the Double D Creek Ranch
arena in Columbus. Five NCHA Cutting Academy clinics
are scheduled for 2007 with the emphasis on the
education and presentation of showing horses. The
series of grass roots clinics are designed to
increase the working knowledge of NCHA rules and
improve showmanship in the arena. Session I of the
Cutting Academy includes segments on understanding
rules, plus information on membership, amateur and
non-pro status, equine nutrition and more. The cost,
which includes a light breakfast and lunch, is just
$25 at the door. The instructor for this session
will be Russell McCord, Director of Judges for NCHA.
Session II features live work critiques with some of
the industry’s leading experts. Cost for Session II
is $125, with reservations and prepayment required.
If you plan to attend Session II, don't delay as
some spots are already reserved and this session is
limited to 25 cutters. Contact Julie Davis (817)
244-6188 at the NCHA office for more information or
to enroll in Session II.
The North Country Stock Horse Association cutting
clinic was very successful. The clinic was organized
by Robert and Debra Clary and was held at Shelby.
The instructor was Wylie Fraser, one of our Montana
trainers. Will have more on this at a later date.
Send an email to info@montanacha.com if you have
anything for the newsletter or contact Shirley
Williams, MCHA Secretary, or me.

Spring is here and so are the MCHA approved
cuttings. April is the month we swing into high
gear: early shows to tune-up before Western National
Finals in Ogden, Utah. The 2007 show season started
with March cuttings at the Double D Creek Ranch in
Columbus, Horse Palace in Billings and MSU
Horseman's Club cutting in Bozeman. April will be
busy with cuttings at the Double D Creek Ranch
produced by Dave Weyer, Horse Palace produced by
Bill and Jann Parker, and the Wes Tibbetts Memorial
cutting in Miles City produced by the Sage Riders
Club. In May cutters will load-up and head to Great
Falls for a cutting produced by Todd Banner. Todd
previously held cuttings at Corvallis but he has
relocated to the Great Falls area. The next stop for
cutters will be the Sapphire Event Center in
Corvallis for the cutting produced by John and Cindy
Stefka. A big thank you to the producers of all of
these cuttings. We appreciate all the hard work and
time they devote to produce a quality cutting.
Attention all MCHA youth members. The Angela Bauer

Congratulations to the MCHA members competing at the
recent NCHA World Finals in Amarillo, Texas. Many

Good luck to our MCHA members competing at the
Western National Championships in Ogden, Utah. Last
year the Montana affiliate had three champions, two
reserve champions and finalists in every class
except one. The Montana affiliate was the reserve
champion of the NCHA/AQHA Affiliate challenge. We
have many talented riders entered this year and hope
to surpass the accomplishments of last year. Anyone
who might be interested in making a trip to Montana
this summer is invited to stop any Montana cutter at
Ogden and ask them about our shows.
Be sure to visit the Montana CHA website,
www.montanacha.com for the latest show results,
standings, classified ads, and other important
information. Montana has a tremendous show schedule
this year and we invite all cutters to come compete.
We would love to have guests in Big Sky Country this
summer.

Montana Cutting Horse Association President's
Message
By: David Markette
The 2007 cutting season is here. We invite all
cutters to come to Montana and cut in Big Sky
country this year. Our producers work hard to
provide quality shows throughout the season. Check
out our schedule on the MCHA website,
www.montanacha.com.
The first MCHA approved cutting will be at the
Double D Creek Ranch Arena at Columbus March 3 and
4. The next weekend, March 10 and 11, Parker Horse
Company will hold their first cutting at the Horse
Palace Arena in Billings. The MSU Horseman's Club
competition is scheduled March 31 – April 1. April
is a busy month with cuttings planned at Miles City,
Billings, and Columbus. Western Championships is
slated for Ogden, Utah, April 26-May 5. Be prepared
to show NCHA membership cards and horse's
registration papers at all Montana CHA shows. Show
secretaries may levy a fine of $5.00 for each
violation if you do not have the required
information.
Now is the time to pay your dues. Dues are $50 per
adult and $10 for youth (18 years and younger). Both
horse owner and rider (including youth) must be
members before showing in order for points to count
toward year-end awards. A subscription to the
Cascade Horseman is included in your dues. This will
be your last issue of Cascade Horseman if you have
not paid your dues.
Another advantage to MCHA membership is classified
advertising on the MCHA website. Members can place a
free text classified ad on the MCHA web site and for
only $10 can add a photo to the ad. Stallion ads,
business ads, and farm and ranch ads are only $25 a
year or advertise in both the business section and
farm/ranch section for $40. For more information or
to place an ad, e-mail
info@montanacha.com.
Congratulations to Randy Holman. Randy placed in the
top 10 at the NCHA World Futurity at Fort Worth,
Texas. Be sure to read the article on Randy. Thank
you to Jann Parker for interviewing Randy and
writing the article.

Congratulations to Randy Holman. Randy riding Smart
N Catty owned by Sandy Sabey placed in the top 10 at
the NCHA World Championship Futurity in Fort Worth,
Texas. This is a first for Montana. We are proud and
very happy for them.
Next month our 2007 cutting season begins. The first
cutting is March 3 and 4 at the Double D Creek Ranch
Arena at Columbus. Dave and Deb Weyer will host this
cutting. The next weekend will see cutters headed to
the Cow Country cutting at the Horse Palace at
Billings. Bill and Jann Parker produce the Cow
Country cuttings. The MSU Horseman's Club cutting
will be in Bozeman on March 31 and April 1.
Now is the time to pay your MCHA dues so your
winnings at the cuttings will count toward year-end
awards. Dues remain the same as last year - $50 for
adults and $10 for youth (18 and under).
Welcome and thank you to our newest MCHA Corporate
Sponsor, Sport Land Trailer Sales and Service with
locations in Lolo, Manhattan and Kalispell. Be sure
to contact them if you are in need of a new trailer
or the old one needs some service. Thank you, also,
to these other new sponsors for 2007 - Ace Hardware

L and Anita Dublin, and Flying Diamond Cutting
Horses – Randy and Vicky Lynn. Returning Corporate
Sponsors are Randy Holman Cutting Horses, Precision
Fence, Mission Mountain Tire, Allied Waste Services,
Billings Livestock Commission Horse Sales,

association could not continue to grow and flourish
without them.
Congratulations to Buddy Westphal on becoming a
grandpa last fall. In a few years hopefully we will
have a new little cutter. Scott and Amy Westphal are
the proud parents of Jaden Scott. I'm sure if you
see Buddy he has pictures to show and stories to
tell.
Be sure to contact me if you have anything you would
like in the newsletter.

Happy New Year
I hope everyone had a joyous holiday season.
The MCHA Board of Directors will meet in
mid-January. Contact me or any board member by
January 15 if you would like an item placed on the
agenda and discussed. Welcome to our new President,
David Markette, Vice-President, Theresa Nelson, and
directors Karla Camp and Kathy Foote. Returning
board members are Wylie Fraser, Darrell Lee, Will
Nuttall, John Seymour and youth director, Fallon
Nuttall. Your association is in very capable hands.
Congratulations to Randy Holman riding Smart N Catty
owned by Sandy Sabey who placed in the top 10 at the
NCHA World Championship Futurity. This is quite an
accomplishment. This is the first time an MCHA
member has advanced to the top 10. We are proud. We
will have more on Randy and Smart N Catty owned by
Sandy Sabey next month.
Congratulations to the following who are in the top

the time to pay your MCHA dues. Memberships are $50
for adults and $10 for youth (18 and under – age as
of Jan. 1, 2007). Remember both horse owner and
rider must be MCHA members before showing in order
for earnings to count toward year-end awards.
